Gohar Vartanyan

(25.01.1926 -

On November 25, 2019 the legendary Soviet secret agent Gohar levonovna Vartanyan, who made a huge contribution to obtaining information necessary to ensure the national interests and security of the USSR/Russia, passed away in Moscow at the age of 93.

Gohar levonovna Vartanyan was born on January 25, 1926 in Leninakan (Gyumri) in Armenia. In the early 1930s, her family moved to Iran.

At the age of 16, she joined the anti-Nazi group of her future husband and colleague, Gevorg Andreevich Vartanyan (later Hero of the Soviet Union), with whom she conducted active intelligence work. In 1943, as part of this group, she participated in the operation to ensure the safety of the leaders of the "Big Three" during the Tehran conference (the three great Allied powers—Great Britain, the United States, and the Soviet Union—formed a Grand Alliance that was the key to Victory). Then the Hitler's secret service efforts to eliminate the leaders of the "Big Three"– Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill"– were undermined. The secret operation, codenamed the Long Jump, was developed by Hitler's special agent, SS-Obersturmbannführer (lieutenant colonel) Otto Skorzeny.

In 1951 the Vartanian family was taken back to the USSR, in 1956 they graduated from the Yerevan Institute of foreign languages. Then Gohar and Gevorg Vartanyan successfully worked as secret agents in many countries of the world. In 1986 the Vartanian family returned to the USSR. According to experts, the results of their work are so significant that they will never be declassified.

Gohar Vartanyan was awarded orders of the Red Banner and Patriotic War II degree and many medals.

The Soviet fiction film "Tehran-43", which tells about the activities of Gevorg, Gohar and other Soviet intelligence agents in Iran, entered the annals of the USSR/Russia cinema forever.

On behalf of the veterans of the Great Patriotic war (WW2) and on my own behalf, I express my deep condolences on the death of Gohar Levonovna. We sincerely sympathize with the family and friends, all who had the honor to know and serve with her.

Gohar levonovna and Gevorg Andreevich will forever remain in the memory of the peoples of Armenia and Russia, in the memory of all defenders of the Fatherland! Rest in peace! We will remember them!
