The Baksan song
Where the paths are covered by snow
And the cliffs are looking very awed
We came up with the song we're singing,
Mountaineers' our fighting squad
These tops are ours in battles
As for the storms - we do not care
When we are ordered, we are ready
To get inside the German’s lair
Comrade, d’you remember snow was so white
And the Baksan forest where enemy did hide
The note in the grenade, left there just in case
Under heavy stones for the coming days
In the fire wood was burning
Strong tea’s getting ready
From behind the lines exhausted
You came, silent but still steady
With the frozen fingers
Wiped the red-hot gun,
Breathed the air deeply -
You were really done
Do you remember, brother, the blizzard of the night
How the enemy soldiers screamed at us in fright
How we responded, blazing all the guns
How returned to bases, just few surviving ones
Where days and nights were twisting aghast
Where mountain tops were covered in snow
We closed the passes with our bodies
And stopped the adversaries’ go.
The day will come and with a mighty blow
Our people will go attacking with their last breath
We’ll all be remembered that here in Caucasus
The country’s defended by us to the death
The time will fly as always does
Dispelling past traces, but never
But never forget those terrible days
Do keep it in your hearts forever
It wasn’t a joke in our camps
The mountains aren’t so forgiving
You need both an icepick and machine-gun
If you want to see day of living
Comrade, d’you remember snow was so white
And the Baksan forest where enemy did hide
We are buried in Bassa and in the Uzhba’s grave
There rest fine soldiers, the heroes and the brave.
